St Pio, or Padre Pio, is a fairly new Saint having been canonized by Pope John Paul II on 16 June 2002.
St Pio was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who lived most of his 81 years with a community in Southern Italy.
He was blessed with many spiritual gifts, e.g. prophecy, bilocation, the ability to read souls and the stigmata (Christ’s wounds on his body).
Hundreds of thousands sought Pio for spiritual direction, and confession (which could take up to 18 hours a day).
Since his death in 1968 many miracles have been attributed to his intercession.
